16 Best Video Game Moments This Generation (So Far)
4. The Botchling Quest - The Witcher 3
Although it was one of this generation's earliest games, The Witcher 3 has remained relevant for years due to its expansive world, morally complex questlines and intricate RPG gameplay. It's remarked by many as not only one of the best games of this era, but perhaps one of the best games ever made.
There are dozens of brilliant quests throughout the story, but none exemplify The Witcher's best qualities as well as the infamous Botchling quest. Hired to find the lost family of a local lord known as The Bloody Baron, Geralt soon realises he's dealing with something much deeper than a simple missing persons case.
For one, it turns out the aforementioned Baron was physically abusing his wife, causing her to miscarry and give birth to a stillborn child that he quickly buried outside his keep. From here the quest goes to some strange and unexpected places, the Baron having to deal with the child he killed returning from the dead as a monster known as a Botchling.
The ritual surrounding this undead fetus is a dark, emotional moment, the Baron having to come to terms with his sins and face his horrible mistakes head-on. The quest summarises what makes The Witcher's world so utterly unique and compelling, its fantasy setting creating mature multilayered stories with superbly well-written characters.
