16 Best Video Game Moments This Generation (So Far)

5. Battling Isshin: The Sword Saint - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

SILENT HILLS pt
Activision

Ask anybody which of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice's bosses is the most memorable and it's more than likely they'll choose Isshin The Sword Saint. The game's unbelievably intimidating final boss, Isshin is far from a pushover, this immortal samurai requiring four phases of precise timing, sharp deflecting and unbelievable patience if you are to triumph in a duel against him.

However, while Isshin is easily the game's toughest opponent, he's a perfect summary of what makes Sekiro such a fantastic detour from Miyazaki's other work. He forces you to get up close and personal, deflecting, countering and using his own moves against him as he grows increasingly stronger each wave.

Although it might take days to truly learn how to conquer him, beating Isshin is so satisfying because it represents your journey throughout Sekiro, the abilities you struggled so hard to master in the opening hours becoming your greatest strength.

Combine that with a picturesque battlefield that's slowly consumed by the howling wind and crackling thunder of a lightning storm, and Isshin's battle becomes the moment that cements Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice as one of the best games of this generation. It's tough, but this challenging encounter without a doubt stands as one of Hidetaka Miyazaki's greatest set pieces to date.
