6. The Playstation Started Life As A Nintendo Add-On

It's like some action movie-style plot; "One day they were friends, but now they're taking each other down!" Yes, believe it or not the idea for a disc-based console originated as a joint venture between Sony and Nintendo. Upon hiring one Ken Kutaragi - a then hardware engineer for Sony - they unveiled the above console in 1991; one that would play both cartridges and CDs. Nintendo subsequently cancelled the deal apparently due to a dispute on how the two behemoths would split their revenue (Sony wanted CD sales, Nintendo; cartridges), leading to Kutaragi charging ahead with the console prototype anyway and birthing the disc-based state of the industry as it exists today.
