8. John Marston's Death - Red Dead Redemption

It's a great day in the office when you're weighing up 'Tying someone to a railroad track' vs. 'gunning down of main character' before putting finger to key, but here we are.
For the latter, Edgar Ross' betrayal of protagonist John Marston doesn't only hit you right in the gut because of its placement during the epilogue of the story, but also in seeing the character you've played as for around 40-60 hours come to a bloody, sputtering and immediate end.
After everything, he doesn't get to retire with his family, he doesn't get to raise his son and teach him how to herd cattle, and he doesn't get to roam the lands a free man. Instead, officer Ross and his company riddle Marston with bullets, in what's got to be one of the most iconic death scenes of all time, not to mention the most visually memorable as he stands for a second, only just barely comprehending what's happened.
