18 Brutal Gaming Challenges You Must Complete Before You Die

2. Reaching The Pac Man Kill Screen

Designed to suck up the coins of unsuspecting children of the age, the Pac-Man games were never going to be easy to begin with. Most of us can manage a level or two, and some really talented people can even get to the tenth or fifteenth level. But it takes the very best of the best to be able to reach the Pac Man kill screen €“ otherwise known as the 256th level. The kill screen appears because the old arcade stations only had one byte of memory, and the highest number you can produce in binary with 8 digits is 255. So, if you manage (somehow) to beat the 255th level, the game doesn€™t know what to do anymore - so it just produces a jumble of letters and numbers amongst a half-finished level screen. Conveniently for the arcade, it also means that you can€™t play anymore. If you manage to fight your way to this screen, then congratulations: it€™s proof of your supreme ability at one of the most famous games of all time.
