7. Shovel Knight

'Pixellated indie platformers' have gotten about as a bad a rap as Microsoft's Kinect, and whilst, yes, Sony are pushing way too many of them down our throats on a monthly basis, occasionally there's a gem so shiny, so worth having and so worth staring at in pure admiration, that everybody should check it out.

Such a treasure is Shovel Knight; Yacht Club's little Kickstarter that's seen the lovable knight go from a penciled sketch, all the way through to a bonafide Nintendo Amiibo. And why? Because Shovel Knight's gameplay, his world's character design and his playability is so perfectly crafted, you have to believe had it released decades earlier, he'd be right up there with Mario and Sonic.

Yes, it's that good. From beginning to end you'll have a big ol' nostalgic smile on your face; one that comes from a team of developers that know how to do the genre justice, to the point where it makes you remember why we love used to love platformers so damn much in the first place.
