This is one of the big ones.

2018's reboot of the God of War franchise was one of the best surprises of the previous generation. The game design gurus at Santa Monica studios successfully overhauled the series' formula, stepping away from the linear brawling that defined the previous entries in order to create an open-world ARPG.

The results were nothing less than outstanding. There's a good reason it was awarded Game of the Year on this website - Kratos' journey through Norse mythology was jam-packed with thrilling, visceral combat, stunning scenery and, to the shock of all, a genuinely moving story.

Kratos' journey to scatter his wife's ashes alongside his son provided some of the PS4's most poignant moments, as the previously one-dimensional avatar of rage struggled to connect with his grieving progeny in scenes that tugged on the heartstrings of every parent who saw them.

Put it this way - nobody ever thought 'poignant' would be a fitting adjective for a God of War game, yet here we are, and we can't wait to see what happens next to Kratos and his boy.

(Please don't "do a Joel" in the next one, developers. Our hearts can't take it).
