19 Most Laughably Unfair Video Game Bosses Of All Time

4. Ecco The Dolphin - Vortex Queen

It's not just the boss fights in Ecco The Dolphin that are unfair, everything is. If you didn't know any better, you would think that every game in the series was designed by Sega to secretly test how quickly they could induce insanity in those that played them. Unforgiving controls, no manual or auto-saves and a total lack of guidance on what the hell you were supposed to be doing at any given moment are all defining features of Ecco The Dolphin, but the game's final boss, the Vortex Queen, takes all of that and ramps it up to 11. Why it's unfair: The actual battle with the Vortex Queen is pretty simple and straightforward as far as Ecco games are concerned. But it's not the Queen's mechanics that make her unfair - it's what happens to you if you're caught by her drones that make it absurd. At any point during the fight, the Queen will spit drones out of her gaping maw that will make it their mission to chase you indefinitely until you either kill them or are captured. Here's the real kicker. If you're caught, you don't just simply 'retry' the fight, oh no. Instead, you're dumped back at the start of the previous level leading up to the boss - 'The Machine'. Yeah, it's not a joke. Each and every time you're caught, you have no choice but to repeat the previous stage to make it back to where you were. Just laugh, it'll make you feel better.
