20 Amazing Video Games That Never Got Sequels
18. Fez
Fez is one of the cornerstone titles of the indie gaming revolution of the early 2010s - an ingenious puzzle-platformer which was widely acclaimed for its incredible level design, as has since influenced an untold number of games.
Fez's critical and commercial success led creator Phil Fish to announce a sequel at E3 2013, but just a month later the game was abruptly cancelled following a Twitter argument between Fish and video game journalist Marcus Beer.
Fish "concluded" the spat by deriding the general air of negativity in the games industry and announcing his exit from games development, effectively cancelling Fez 2.
The news sent shockwaves throughout the industry, catching even Fish's employees at studio Polytron totally off-guard, and while many assumed Fish would eventually resume development of Fez 2 after a cooling-off period, over a decade later it's still never materialised.
In a 2023 interview Fish claimed that he never had much enthusiasm for Fez 2 and so the argument with Beer simply gave him an "out" to cancel it.
All the same, considering the enduring love for the original game there are still many, many players who would love to see a follow-up.
