20 Best Indie Games Of The Decade

2. Undertale

Undertale game
Toby Fox

This was number one in the list for the longest time, as literally every single pixel, written word, character design etc. is loveable in Undertale.

One-man coding powerhouse Toby Fox put this together across three years, and the beauty of this top-down dungeon-crawler comes from an abundance of choice.

Uniquely for gaming, you can opt to make friends with every single creature you come across, in a context where all monsters have been taught to fear humans. They all have specific ticks, responses to conversation prompts or "get outs" that allow you to avoid combat... or you can just cleave them in half and keep going.

Undertale is anything but binary, too. Every major character you interact with can end up in a number of different positions come the final credits, and the game's script is razor sharp, providing commentary on game tropes, character archetypes and online meme culture in equal measure.

The soundtrack is outstanding, and some characters even remember if you closed the game, restarted it or messed up a save.

In short, it's essential.
