If there's one game that represents the indie spirit through and through; the notion of striving out on your own with one napkin-scribbled idea that cultivates a following and gains global recognition, it's Minecraft.

Now, let's separate the art from the artist for the sake of this entry, as creator Marcus "Notch" Persson's various comments and thoughts online haven't endeared him to many, but Minecraft is easily the most successful indie project of the decade by a landslide.

As if it needs recapping that Minecraft is ostensibly digital Lego, the meat of the experience for me was always getting lost in its survival aspects. Plundering caves, creating dream homes with your loved ones, scaling a mountain until nighttime, then making a mad dash back to safety - they're brilliant, dynamic, ever-changing moments of sheer originality, and they change with each and every player.

Minecraft might be everywhere now; it might have been bought by Microsoft and lost its indie origins, but that doesn't change its role as a trailblazer in the industry.
