Super Mario Bros. 3 feels like the true successor to the original Super Mario Bros.. Whilst the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 adds very little and feels more like an expansion than a sequel, Super Mario Bros. 3 builds upon everything present in the original to make what is easily the best game on the NES.

The original game only had a few power-ups with the Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower, and the Starman, whilst Super Mario Bros. 3 has so many more with all of those returning alongside the Super Leaf, the Tanooki Suit, the Magic Wing, the Frog Suit, and the Hammer Suit.

Super Mario Bros. didn't have much variety in the worlds you explored, whilst in Super Mario Bros. 3 there is so much level-theme variety and gimmicks. It makes every level feel unique.

In the first game, you fought Bowser and his Fake Bowser's a number of times, whilst in Super Mario Bros. 3 you get to fight against the Koopalings each of which have unique abilities.

There are more enemies, the controls are better, and it's a much more substantial adventure.

Super Mario Bros. basically created the 2D platforming genre. Super Mario Bros. 3 perfected it.
