Trust Nintendo to take their sweet time iterating on the "online shooter", not releasing the Wii U-exclusive Splatoon until 2015, though it appeared on a console nobody owned.

Still, we'd all heard of Splatoon's charms, perhaps caught a screenshot or two - making a Switch sequel the perfect combination of curiosity purchases and final product payoff. In short, Splatoon 2 is everything Nintendo do better than everyone else, applied to one of the most engaging and immediately playable genres on the planet.

Brilliantly, Splatoon 2's main Turf War mode challenges each team to canvas the map in your specific colour - so kills can be optional if you play more elusively. This effective premise opens up a totally different set of weapons and items too - from paint rollers to splat-bombs, shotguns to sprayers - letting you wipe out the opposition and make some Jackson Pollock paintings at the same time.

With a map rotation that changes every few hours, questions dictating which team you're fighting for during community events, a solid single player with some ACE bosses and new weapons every few weeks, Splatoon 2 is one hell of a package - and one with real heart.
