20 Best Video Game Multiplayer Modes Of All Time
12. Animus Training - Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
They said it couldn't be done - and back when Assassin's Creed was at the height of its popularity, nobody was asking for a multiplayer mode.
Still, Ubisoft pressed on, and somehow - even with a lore-based reason as to why there were all these random matches occurring (future Abstergo workers were testing new Animus software) - we had a working version of Assassin's Creed online. In a complete subversion of online staples, AC centred on actively avoiding confrontation, blending in with the environment or learning how to lose your pursuer without making it too obvious.
At the beginning of each match you're given a target - as is the knowledge that another player is also tracking you at the same time. Thus enters a game of cat and mouse as players try to walk with crowds of NPCs that might share their character model, goading their opponents to assassinate the wrong person - thus revealing their position and letting you get the drop on them instead.
It might sound maligned and completely unnecessary, but Ubisoft delivered one of the most original video game multiplayer modes in gaming history.
