20 Best Video Game Multiplayer Modes Of All Time
11. Spies Vs. Mercs - Splinter Cell
Succeeding immensely thanks to being one of the first games to embrace Xbox Live in 2004, Spies vs. Mercs is almost exactly what it sounds like.
You pick a side - either the third-person Spies or first-person Mercs - and get to work. Spies are fundamentally far weaker than the mercs in any duel, but have Sam Fisher's full array of gadgets and athletic abilities to balance things out. That means split-jumps to stay aloft in corridors, electro-shocks and even chokeholds (complete with a tiny window of open mic so you can taunt your foe before snapping their neck).
Though the mode went away for a few instalments, 2013's Blacklist brought it back better than ever - it's just a shame that game's negative reputation garnered from dropping Michael Ironside as Fisher crippled its sales.
