16. Detroit Become Human

Switching gears severely into racially-charged territory, David Cage plying his on-the-nose scriptwriting to an allegorical tale of android oppression is just about as scattershot as you might expect.

Thankfully, its heart is in the right place. Yes, things like throwing holocaust iconography onto your characters isn't the most tasteful thing, but the game's three-way split of characters ranging from motherly carers to police officers lets you explore every facet of this humanity-stricken world. Mainly it boils down to the discovery of an android's moral or judicial rights, and whether they "deserve" them, though how that plays out is up to you.

Included are an astonishing amount of choices, seeing every scene play out in a huge number of ways, also dictating which characters bow out the story early, and which ending you get as a result.

It's never smooth, but it is bold and experimental. If you can learn to just "go with" how Cage treats racial conflict and tension across human history like a box of Lego, Detroit has a lot to offer as a thrilling story.
