20 Best Video Games Of 2018
17. Dragon Quest XI
Possibly the best looking game of the year if we're talking about particular styles and not just 4K-levels of graphical detail, Dragon Quest's glorious return to turn-based combat was one welcomed with open arms.
The old school Final Fantasy-level Dragon Quest VIII was all the way back in 2004, and as DQ 9 and 10 were handheld and online-only releases respectively, it's damn good to go on a quest loaded with loveable characters, hilariously fun-to-kill enemies and a slew of powers that look astonishing to bust out, all with tight, reliable gameplay.
It might have been Octopath Traveller that was intentionally trying to make you remember the "good old days" of 90s RPG gaming, but Dragon Quest 11's time-tested mechanics, signature Akira Toriyama design and character choices offer plenty tactical advantages and last-minute victories, making for a luscious adventure from front to back.
