7. The Witness
How do we take in information, repurpose it, explain it? Created by the mastermind behind Braid, Jonathan Blow, The Witness' gameplay centres around a series of puzzle grids where you have to pilot a small line of light from one end to the other. As the entire game itself is an exploration of knowledge and learning, it can be hard to adequately convey just how genius these various systems are.
Various symbols get introduced, as do a number of environmental cues as to how to solve them. However, at no point are you given any explicit tutorials - it's more that if you take the time to explore, you'll find one perplexing symbol being used in a different way, allowing to feed this new information back into what was halting your progress.
See what I mean about being hard to describe?
Blow himself stated that many players can't actually articulate how they know what to do to solve his puzzles, because the game doesn't tell you in words. Therein lies The Witness' true brilliance, and one of the most transcendent gaming experiences you can ever have.
