20 Best Video Games Of The Last 20 Years
10. Metal Gear Solid
From top to bottom, veteran developer Hideo Kojima's first foray into 3D was a landmark release in every respect.
Fully-voiced characters with Hollywood-rivalling acting chops, gaming's first iconic human action hero in Solid Snake, cutscenes shot like movies, twists, turns, unique stealth gameplay - I mean we're talking about something that grabbed the industry by the shoulders and shook it, screaming, "Are not entertained?!"
To this day revisiting Metal Gear Solid is a joy, its occasionally quirky beats adding the perfect level of individuality to the wider east-meets-west ideology of mechs and militaristic terrorist plots. It helped establish MGS as one of the most enjoyable mythologies around, etching all manner of quotes and one-liners into our minds in the process.
From the moment MGS landed, gaming would never be the same again. Kojima proved our industry could rival that of film, and some would say, provided the seeds by which to surpass it.
