Pokémon Sword and Shield starts as any other Pokémon game. You pick and name your character, you're introduced into the world by your friendly local scientist, and then you wake up in your mother's home.

However, there is one clever detail hidden inside this timeless Pokémon cliché. One detail that is so small that most players won't even realize it's there, even though it's hidden in plain view.

When you wake up inside your room, you can notice that your avatar owns a Nintendo Switch just as you do. In fact, they own the exact same Switch model.

The detail is hard to notice on your first playthrough, but the Joy-Cons of the in-game Switch are secretly programmed to match the real-life Joy-Cons you're using to play the game.

Sword and Shield secretly reads your console's data to determine what color Joy-Cons you're using, and then it takes this information to make the protagonist's Joy-Con appear identical.

Again, when you just start the game, it might seem like a silly coincidence, but if you were ever to change your Joy-Cons' type, you can actually notice that the in-game Joy-Cons will change color as well.
