Battlefield 2042 looked absolutely stunning when it was announced. Promising to be the biggest Battlefield yet, trailers showcased 128-player battles, bigger maps, bigger explosions and bigger action all round. Subsequent gameplay trailers showed tanks and jets battling across various locations around the globe, and huge weather events like tornadoes and sandstorms were shown to be capable of completely transforming environments.

When Battlefield 2042 launched in November 2021, though, it just couldn't quite live up to the promise of its initial trailers. There were plenty of bugs and technical issues, optimisation problems across different platforms, below par maps and even the removal of some familiar Battlefield series features like a conventional scoreboard or in-game voice chat. For some, it simply needed more time in development and shouldn't have released as early as it did.

Developer DICE did set about making things right, releasing substantial updates that improved the overall experience. The game is in a far superior state today than it was on release. Those trailers promised huge battles on an unprecedented scale, but the chaos associated with Battlefield 2042's launch was far bigger than any chaos found during the game's skirmishes.
