Madmind Studios' horror game Agony was set in the depths of hell itself, and its announcement trailer showed off an incredibly creepy and atmospheric aesthetic, full of exactly the kind of demons and creatures you'd expect to be crawling round in hell. This was a refreshing change from many other horror games on the market at the time, and the result was a trailer that made Agony's gruesome vision of hell one of the game's biggest selling points.

However, when the game launched in 2018, it turned out that the trailer was as a red herring. Agony turned out to be little more than a bland, uninspiring first person survival horror game lacking in some basic fundamental mechanics. Dull puzzles, shallow stealth mechanics and throwaway objectives made the whole experience forgettable, despite how much promise the trailer's version of hell had.

The setting of hell itself still proved to be one of Agony's better elements, but it was nowhere near enough to redeem its other less forgivable components. In the end, although it was completely unintentional, the name 'Agony' turned out to be quite a fitting title for many who experienced the final game.
