20 Gaming Facts That Will RUIN Your Favourite Franchise

17. "Boy" - God Of War

There is a plethora of reasons why the God Of War reboot is adored so much by those who've played it. Its shift to Norse mythology was a breath of fresh air for the franchise, the combat was visceral and satisfying, and its continuous one-shot presentation was as wonderfully stylish as it was intimate. Another reason why this game has garnered so much acclaim is the heartfelt relationship between Kratos and his young son Atreus.

This father-son dynamic was the emotional driving force behind the game. As moving and bittersweet as watching their bond develop over the course of the game was, clips of Kratos calling the youngster "Boy" in a thundering voice took over the internet, becoming a massive meme upon the game's release.

Although hearing the Ghost of Sparta address his son so unaffectionately served to establish his character as cold and distant, the real reason behind this creative decision wasn't as nuanced.

In a now-deleted video, game director Cory Barlog revealed that the decision to call Atreus "Boy" was due to the character not having a name at that time. Had the name been decided, the final game may not have been as impactful.
