8. Badgering Grandad (Mole Mania)

Mole Mania justifiably lacks the prestige of other Shigeru Miyamoto’s creations such as Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Star Fox.

Yet, it was one of best action-puzzlers on the original Game Boy, with a charming art style and challenging gameplay loop fueling main man Muddy Mole’s mission to rescue his wife and seven children from the malicious Farmer Jinbe.

Much like how the Kong family meet family elder Cranky Kong during their adventures in the Donkey Kong Country games, Muddy encounters Grandpa Mole – otherwise known as Old Mole – at save points. Ordinarily, Grandpa Mole is happy to restore Muddy’s health and give him tips, but if the heroic mole pesters him too much, Grandpa Mole’s attitude will go from sweet to sour.

Specifically, bothering Grandpa Mole too many times will force him to warn Muddy not to “get too greedy with the hearts.” If Muddy doesn’t get the hint, Grandpa Mole will declare, “Don’t you have a job to do? Stop buggin’ me and get to work!” before advising him to “give it a rest.”

If Muddy doesn’t, Grandpa Mole will shout: “Woo! You ungrateful mole! Just wait ‘til I get my claws on you!” Then, it’s game over for Muddy and his family.

Honestly, he has only himself to blame.
