14. Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark)

Star of Rare's excellent Perfect Dark series, Joanna Dark gave the developers' first-person shooter a distinctive personality and identity that elevated the game beyond being a simple Goldeneye spiritual-successor. Although the entire series has always walked the line between being a down-to-earth action game and a sci-fi inspired spy shooter, Joanna Dark as a character definitely allowed the series to revel in the silliness of the latter. While not the most three-dimensional of protagonists, Dark worked in the same way that Lara Croft did in the early Tomb Raider games; by giving players a different and unique protagonist in a genre that was mostly dominated by dudes.
