Hidetaka Miyazaki's latest comes a scant few months after Dark Souls, his most famous game, was awarded with the label of "Ultimate Game of All Time" at the Game Awards. So it's safe to say that people are a little bit hyped about his next work.
Fortunately, Elden Ring looks set to match its audience's expectations.
The beta released earlier in the year gave an exciting glimpse into what FromSoftware have been cooking up for players since Elden Ring was first announced in 2019. In a departure from the Dark Souls formula, Elden Ring offers a true open world to explore. The old "See those mountains? You can climb them" promise of open world gaming is well in effect here, except its more "See that dragon? It will brutally murder you if you get too close".
Elden Ring's boss battles showed that FromSoftware haven't gone soft in the switch to an open world, as the likes of Margit, Darriwil and the Grave Warden pummeled thousands of unprepared players into oblivion during the beta. And frankly, we wouldn't have it any other way.
