20 Most Controversial Games of the 2020s (So Far)
10. Diablo Immortal
Few games in recent memory have faced more vitriol because they weren't the game that fans were expecting.
Before BlizzCon 2018, it was revealed that some exciting new Diablo news was on the way, naturally leading many to believe that the long-awaited Diablo IV would finally be revealed.
Instead, it turned out to be a rather naff-looking mobile game, Diablo Immortal, which naturally caused the fanbase to meltdown both online and at BlizzCon itself.
During a Q&A, one attendee grilled Principal Game Designer Wyatt Cheng about the game, to which he replied "Do you guys not have phones?," which certainly didn't go down well with anyone and swiftly became a meme.
Given that Diablo is a traditionally PC-centric franchise, a mobile-led title simply wasn't what anyone wanted, and to make matters worse, it launched rife with aggressive microtransaction nonsense.
This resulted in Immortal becoming the lowest user-rated game on Metacritic at the time of its 2022 release, denting Blizzard's favour with fans until Diablo IV was finally released the next year.
