Why a seemingly random RPG you've barely heard of? Because the entirety of Japan have, and you need to play the game that literally has been mandated to only release on weekends, as its popularity once resulted in a thousands of people taking time off from work at once, essentially costing companies millions of yen in the process. Okay, that 'fact' has gone through a number of permutations over the years, but either way, the Dragon Quest games are some of the finest JRPGs of all time, the eighth still having awesome turn-based combat and art drawn up by Dragon Ball Z's Akira Toriyama. It's an absolutely humungous game, but one that doesn't outstay its welcome thanks to a smattering of visually distinct areas and voiced characters with bucketloads of personality and charm.
