Initially released in 2006, The Godfather saw players take control of an unnamed protagonist who's brought into the Corleone family.

Alongside embarking on their own quest to avenge their father's murder, players also take on missions that intersect with events from Coppola's 1972 masterpiece. These included planting a gun in a restaurant's bathroom and sneaking through a mansion to plant a horse's head in the bed of an uncooperative movie producer.

It was hugely ambitious for its time, successfully recreating its 1940s New York setting and implementing various systems. Its main highlight was its innovative "extortion" system. Built around an engaging combat system complete with context-sensitive melee attacks and brutal executions, players could intimidate business owners to forcefully take over their operations.

While a definitive edition released for the next console generation included new missions, weapons, and vehicles, the repetitive nature of the moment-to-moment gameplay and the lifeless world fell short of what other open world games were already doing.

With the help of modern hardware and some fine-tuning, The Godfather could be a period crime drama on par with the Mafia series, giving players a definitive version of the game that's as good as the film it's based on.
