Before FromSoftware gave the world Dark Souls or Demon's Souls, they created Kuon, a unique survival horror set during Japan's Heian period. Drawing upon Japanese mythology and folklore, this title took place in a Kyoto manor overrun with demons where an exorcist has mysteriously disappeared.

As with the developer's later titles, a large part of Kuon's storytelling is derived from environmental details and bloodied notes found throughout the game. This approach to the narrative gave the location a distinct sense of place that helped immerse players within its unnerving atmosphere.

One of this title's most interesting aspects was its multiple playable characters. Told across three phases, each segment followed a different character making their way through the manor, giving their own unique insights into the harrowing goings-on. After completing the first two phases, players then unlocked the final "Kuon" phase, which connected the plotlines' events to unveil the nightmarish truth in a heart-pounding finale.

Although now favourably remembered, poor sales and a limited release have subsequently made Kuon almost impossible to get hold of today. With classic survival horror currently undergoing a resurgence, now is the perfect time for Kuon to get the appreciation that it always deserved.
