Skate Story is undoubtedly one of the weirdest games on this list, and that’s what makes it so incredible. It’s the brainchild of solo-developer Sam Eng, releasing rather quietly in late 2025. In Skate Story, you play as a skateboarding demon made of glass who’s made a deal with the devil: descend the seven layers of hell and devour seven moons to earn your freedom.

As you can probably tell from that plot description, the game is unabashedly absurd — your body will be constantly shattering as you get the hang of new moves, you beat bosses by doing sick tricks, and sometimes you’ll find yourself on side quests like delivering an Arizona Iced Tea to a thirsty statue of a philosopher.

Having a skateboarding game with a complex overarching narrative is a rarity, and since release it’s really set Skate Story apart for players and critics alike. Some of the Tony Hawk series, for example, have varying levels of story, but none of them are sending you through the levels of hell on an existential quest.

Skate Story released to many 9s and 10s from critics, and currently sits at overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam. It’s the perfect hybrid of skating and story, which I suppose is exactly what you’d hope for from a game with that name.
