20 Trailers So Bad They KILLED Video Games
9. Hatred
Controversy surrounding video games is nothing new, as Mortal Kombat, Manhunt, and Grand Theft Auto have proven time and time again.
Be that as it may, the brutality in Hatred is on another level. Destructive Creations' isometric shoot 'em up was the first game to receive an Adults Only rating for violence alone. Although bloodshed in any property tends to drum up "oh, think of the children" discussions, Hatred could avoid being dismissed or stigmatised so long as it had artistic merit.
But based on Hatred's trailer, there's no moral ambiguity or justification behind the malicious behaviour of the main character, deservingly called The Antagonist.
Expecting players to perform cruel executions as this malevolent misanthrope, solely to satiate his own bloodlust was alarming. On top of that, the promo came across like Hatred had nothing else to offer. Even though the game has a few neat mechanics, the trailer took the shock-value approach, showing off tasteless massacres instead.
Thanks to the braindead AI and laborious gameplay, it was no surprise when Hatred bombed. But based on its negative reception prior to release, Hatred's failure felt like a foregone conclusion.
