9. Failed Upgrade - Metin 2
Metin 2 is an MMORPG set in fantasy Far Eastern kingdoms filled with mystical beasts and monsters. Most of the game consists of levelling up your character and making them stronger with EXP, but if you want your character to reach peak strength, you also have to upgrade your items.
And this is where the skill-based aspects of the game give way to its painfully bad RNG.
The main way of upgrading your weapon is by giving it to the town blacksmith along with necessary upgrade materials. The mechanic is pretty similar to Dark Souls and upgrading your items in Andre’s forge, except Metin 2’s system has a brutal twist—the success of the upgrade is determined by chance, and if the process fails, the item is destroyed forever.
No matter how skilled you are, to reach the peak of power, you have to participate in a completely random upgrade system that has increasingly higher chances of destroying your best weapons with a single stroke of bad luck, forcing you to start all over.
Metin 2 is somehow even more brutal with its upgrade mechanic than the game that came out with a literal “Prepare to Die” edition.
