20 Unlucky Moments That TOTALLY Ruin Your Game

12. Cursed Starts - Caves of Qud

Caves of Qud is a retro-style roguelike RPG set in a sci-fi postapocalyptic world divided between mutants and True Kin humans seeking to cybernetically enhance their own bodies.

The game has received multiple awards and nominations thanks to its unique gameplay in which everything, starting with the world’s NPCs and ending on the available quests, lore, and the in-game political factions, is randomly generated at the start of your run.

The game is highly customizable, and pretty much no single run is the same, but as you may imagine, with high randomness comes equally high chances that something may go terribly wrong.

Although it’s not something common, if you are unlucky, the game can spawn you in a world where you can either softlock yourself out of completing the main quest or, even worse, be forced to suffer an absolutely brutal existence.

Since the game’s 2024 release, players have reported all sorts of cursed starts, such as high-level mimics spawning en masse in low-level areas, key quest areas locked behind impassable obstacles, or their character instantly getting infected with a disease that turns their body into stone.

You never know what you’re going to get, and in some cases, you might be so unlucky that you won’t even know your save’s cursed until you’ve sunk hours into it.
