No one can argue BioWare dominated the Western RPG market from the 90s through the late 2000s, rivalled only by Bethesda. Their high point was the landmark Mass Effect trilogy, a showcase of how to weave narrative threads and gamer investment on a massive blockbuster scale, which other ambitious franchises have struggled to match since. But the series eventually lost its shine, and while a new entry is on the way, the studio today is a shadow of its former self with far less anticipation for what’s next.
That’s what makes Exodus so intriguing. Several key former BioWare creatives - alongside talent from Naughty Dog and 343 Industries - are building a galaxy-spanning action RPG that scratches the familiar itch of exploring distant systems, meeting alien species, and bonding with a starship crew. It may aim a little smaller than Mass Effect, but everything shown so far looks polished, ambitious, and... you can apparently beat the crud out of a power-suited bear.
Still, big studio talent doesn't guarantee success; just look at the recent struggles at the shuttered The Initiative. Early previews are promising, but Exodus will need a carefully chosen release window or risk being yet another new ambitious franchise that never takes flight.
