17. Nier: Automata - March 10, 2017
The original Nier came and went without much fanfare. It was a quirky Japanese role-playing game that featured a cast of odd characters and a bizarre story. It was the very definition of niche. Fast forward seven years and we are about to get Nier: Automata, a game that has a lot more appeal thanks to one reason: it’s developed by Bayonetta devs Platinum Games.
A demo launched on PSN late in 2016 and demonstrated the level of combat on offer, and it’s quite something. Featuring plenty of fast action and a plethora of giant foes, Neir: Automata deserves to find a considerably larger audience than its predecessor. Whether or not it will remains to be seen, but don’t give this a pass simply because you didn’t play the original. Fans of frenetic, deep combat systems will love what is on offer here, and it looks pretty cool too.
It still has plenty of oddball characters, but there’s nothing wrong with that.
