20 Upcoming Video Games Absolutely NOBODY Wants
16. Teammates
One topic is dominating The Discourse right now, and that's the role of AI in video games development, and specifically the ethics of using Generative AI, which typically scrapes the Internet for data, effectively allowing it to steal the work of artists.
And the latest game to wade into this debate is Teammates, a sci-fi shooter which uses GenAI to turn its NPCs into "living companions" capable of responding organically to the player's voice.
While there are some theoretically interesting ideas at play here, there are naturally concerns about such tech both putting video game writers out of work and, again, where GenAI is getting its data-set from.
Ultimately Teammates seems less like an actual game-in-the-making than a tech demo intended to shore up excitement with investors, as part of an industry-wide push to normalise GenAI in video games.
And so, it's tough to be excited about any of that.
It remains to be seen how Teammates will shake out, but for many, they still want to see handcrafted games whose every moment is crafted by a human being rather than an algorithm.
