20 Video Game Movie and TV Moments That INSULTED Fans
8. Don't Say "Hell" - Doom (2005)
Fast-paced first-person shooter Doom came along in 1993 and changed the gaming landscape for good. The game introduced us to the moons of Mars, on which we must fight zombies and demons, before literally winding up in hell itself. Since then we have enjoyed seven additional main games and lord only knows how many expansions and spin-offs.
But, across these thirty-three years, there have only been two film adaptations – and there’s a good reason why.
Starring Dwayne Johnson during his awkward “The Rock” phase, as he transitioned from the ring to the big screen using his WWE creds, Andrzej Bartkowiak’s Doom follows a squad of eight marines sent to a research facility on Mars that is under attack from demon-like mutants. And that’s where one of the main problems is, as far as gamers are concerned: the filmmakers weren’t willing to make the monsters actual demons from hell, chickening out and explaining them away with science.
So, yes, Doom is nobody’s idea of a great Doom film, but even if they got the demons right, would it be? The original games don’t lend themselves to narrative filmmaking, and retaining the first-person format at the cinema is not a viable option.
