20 Video Game Movie and TV Moments That INSULTED Fans
7. Running Down the Clock - Mortal Kombat (2021)
Half a decade ago now, director Simon McQuoid and co. did the smart thing by abandoning the established Mortal Kombat film chronology and starting again. This delivered a film with enough juice to satiate fans of the game franchise and newcomers alike, while setting itself up for sequels.
Mortal Kombat introduces us to new character Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a young yet washed-up MMA fighter and descendant of series regular Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), whose encounter with supernatural assassin Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) draws him into the world of interdimensional fighting championships. Allying with Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks) and Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Cole signs on to defend Earthrealm against Outworld in the next Mortal Kombat games, all while coming to terms with his unique lineage.
And that’s it. That’s all. We end the film on a fight between Scorpion and Sub-Zero, with the actual Mortal Kombat contest looming somewhere ahead in sequel form. It doesn’t ruin the film, but it is an anticlimax to journey so far with the film only to get shafted like this at the last minute.
