Ever since Halo: Combat Evolved hit the original Xbox, fans of the military sci-fi action games have been baying for a film or TV adaptation. And in 2022, some twenty-one years after the first game’s release, they finally got it.

With two seasons of Halo in the bag, the show has offered up plenty of goodies for fans of the games, not least in the form of super-soldier Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, the series lead, taken directly from the front lines of the games. Played by Pablo Schreiber, MC leads Silver Team in the 26th-century war against the alien alliance Covenant.

And while there have been a few missteps or moments that have left fans groaning – check out the reaction to MC taking his helmet off – there are only a handful that actually warrant the backlash. Foremost amongst these is the decision to pair off the big guy with human Covenant spy prisoner-of-war Makee (Charlie Murphy). The morality of this move aside, it’s a big departure from game lore, in which the Chief is supposed to be an ascetic warrior whose devotion is to the cause, not his base desires; and it’s a narrative decision the actor himself didn’t even agree with.
