The announcement of any new FromSoftware game will reliably whip its loyal fanbase into a frenzy, but things reached a whole other level when the developer announced this wild collaboration totally outta nowhere.
At E3 2019, a stunning cinematic reveal trailer was dropped for the studio's new action-RPG Elden Ring, which hailed it as not only the new game from legendary director Hidetaka Miyazaki, but a most unexpected team-up with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin.
For fantasy fans it was basically the most heavenly match imaginable, and even though the trailer didn't clarify the precise nature of this creative partnership, it pulled off the near-impossible feat of making an already all-timer announcement even more hype.
Ultimately Martin was responsible for crafting Elden Ring's backstory, lore, and overall world-building, while Miyazaki wrote the in-game narrative.
Hilariously, it was almost a full two years after this surprise reveal that FromSoftware returned with a gameplay trailer, which at least proved more than worth the wait.
