20 Video Game Sequels NOBODY Defends
11. Alone In The Dark: Illumination (2015)
Alone in the Dark was once a groundbreaking series that helped pioneer the survival horror genre. Without it, the likes of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and more might never have come to fruition. So, what was such an influential franchise, known for its Lovecraftian haunted-house settings, doing in 2015? Oh, well, it was attempting to create an online-only four-person co-op shooter.
Yes, it was as bad as it sounds.
Illumination, the sixth instalment of the franchise, was a woeful gaming experience. The mere concept, taking survival-horror exploration and action and turning it into a mindless co-op shooter, was bad enough, but the game added salt to the wound by not even doing it right. It was a dire title plagued by mindless AI, awful levels, a boatload of technical issues, and generally uninteresting gameplay.
The clear attempt to emulate the likes of Left 4 Dead showed how desperate Atari were to breathe new life into the series, which only further ruined its status. Sadly, the 2024 reboot hasn't really brought any glory back either.
