20 Video Game Sequels NOBODY Defends

5. Hotel Mario (1994)

The dreaded relationship between Nintendo and the Phillips CD-i has already reared its ugly head on this list, thanks to its crossover with the Legend of Zelda series. But, while plenty of gamers remember Phillips' dreadful take on Hyrule, many often forget that they got their mitts on everyone's favourite Italian Plumber too. The result was, unsurprisingly, one of the worst Mario games ever made.

Hotel Mario was a puzzle game that tasked the titular hero with venturing around a unique version of the Mushroom Kingdom, which had been converted into a series of hotels by Bowser, yes, really. You had to solve a series of puzzles based on opening and closing doors, which grew boring almost immediately thanks to the lack of challenge, repetition, and mundane design. That's three things Mario has never been known for.

It also, of course, featured the CD-i's signature terrible cutscenes, looking like they'd been scraped together in MS Paint, complete with awful voice acting, writing, and animation. It's no surprise Mario fans hate this stain on this franchise's otherwise near-perfect overalls.
