20 Video Game Villains That SHOULDN'T Have Died

15. Lucien Lachance - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Bethesda Game Studios

You won't find many characters in the entire Elder Scrolls saga more memorable than Lucien Lachance - the Dark Brotherhood recruiter who serves as your glorified mentor for large swaths of the game.

But Lucien reaches an absolutely devastating and utterly grisly end when, while seeking out the traitor within the Dark Brotherhood, he's framed for it himself and brutally executed by the unforgiving Black Hand.

More to the point, Lucien wasn't just killed - he was tortured, mutilated, stripped, and hung upside down for his apparent sins.

Now, was Lucien's death a creative mistake on the part of Bethesda?

Probably not - much as we love the guy's entire vibe, this is one of the few deaths in the Elder Scrolls series that well and truly hits even hardened players right in the gut.

But in the most literal sense, the guy did nothing wrong - he wasn't the traitor and absolutely shouldn't have paid a mortal debt he didn't owe.
