20 Video Game Villains You Never Realised Got The Last Laugh
8. Gaunter O'Dimm - The Witcher 3
Although the titular Wild Hunt are meant to be the main antagonists of The Witcher 3, they are actually far from being the most dangerous villains in the game.
That title goes, without a doubt, to Gaunter O’Dimm.
Masquerading as a simple mirror merchant, Gaunter O’Dimm is secretly a powerful, demon-like entity that makes monkey paw-style pacts with mortals in exchange for their souls.
This kind of pact gone wrong serves as the main plot point of the Heart of Stone DLC, in which Geralt has to decide between collecting the soul of one of O’Dimm’s debtors, Olgierd, to pay off his own debt, or defying the demon and banishing him from the mortal realm.
Except it’s actually not as simple as the game might make you believe it is.
In reality, no matter which ending you go for, Gaunter O’Dimm will always come out on top. If you give him Olgierd’s soul, he gets what he wants and leaves. If you fight him, you manage to banish him to his own realm, but Gaunter remarks that he cannot be killed and that the only thing Geralt achieved was making a very powerful enemy for himself.
Given the reality-bending abilities he often displays, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve lost against Gaunter making this choice.
