Nier: Automata takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where an alien invasion drove humans to near-extinction, and the survivors of the attack created a special android military force named YoRHa in a dire attempt to reclaim their home planet.

At one point in the game, you learn that the aliens have been eradicated and all that’s left on Earth are their own robotic creations, which they made to counteract YoRHa’s operations.

However, although this twist reveals that the game’s villains have technically been dealt with, there is a second twist that shows you they managed to accomplish their goals anyway.

At the start of the game, you’re told that the remaining humans are all cooped up in a moon base, where they give orders to the android army.

However, over the course of the story, you eventually see signs that the Council of Humanity is actually dead as well, and the war between the machines on Earth is waged for two species that have been long gone, after the last humans have succumbed to the virus the aliens unleashed on their planet.

The discovery of the aliens’ eradication could almost make you feel hopeful for humanity’s future if there were any humans left.
