20 Video Games That LIED (And Got Away With It)

The Resident Evil series reinvented itself with 2017's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which moved the series away from the 3rd person action-orientated games, to pure survival horror with a brand-new first person perspective. Another new change was the addition of Ethan Winters, a likeable new protagonist who went through huge amounts of turmoil in Biohazard.

This was followed by Resident Evil Village, which continued Ethan's story. The game opens with what looks like the brutal murder of Ethan's wife, Mia, and the abduction of his daughter Rose by series regular Chris Redfield. Ethan sets off on Chris' trail through a snowy European village to get his daughter back.

Fans figured Chris wouldn't do this for no reason, but the explanation only comes during the game's climax. It turns out that the woman Chris shot was not the real Mia at all. Instead, she was the game's primary antagonist, Mother Miranda, the mysterious cult leader of the game's titular village. She plotted to kidnap the real Mia in order to ultimately abduct Rose, and use her to resurrect her own daughter. 

While her plan ultimately failed and Ethan eventually saved Mia and Rose, players who were treated to that incredibly memorable prologue had been duped for the most part. Throw in the fact that Ethan also finds out he isn't actually human himself, after technically dying during the events of Resident Evil 7, and you'll see that Resident Evil Village's narrative just refused to play it safe.
