20 Video Games That Punish You For Being Too Skilled

7. Dodge Cheats - Monster Rancher

Oblivion Remastered
Nintendo

Monster Rancher is one of the more unique games on the PlayStation. For the uninitiated, the game has a special feature that allows you to hatch new monsters by inserting random CD discs into your console.

Some of the monsters you get with these methods are stronger than others, but if you know what’s good for you, you will keep your roster of critters somewhat balanced, as aside from fun disc mechanics, Monster Rancher also has a secret difficulty scaling system that can be brutally punishing for overly skilled players.

The main goal of the game is to train your monsters and make them compete in battle tournaments against other creatures, so you might feel tempted to make your creature as untouchable as possible.

However, due to the secret difficulty scaling, the less your creature gets hit, the harder it will be to hit the enemy, too.

With each damage-free round, your enemies have their dodging skills increased, to the point where it becomes completely impossible to hit them and the game becomes unplayable.

For this reason, if you want to win tournaments in Monster Rancher, make sure your critter lets their opponent get a few cheap shots every now and then.
