20 Video Games That Ruined Their Own Potential

17. Beyond: Two Souls (2013)

The Hype: Quantic Dream's follow-up to their ambitious Heavy Rain had two secret weapons that seemed to ensure it would be their best game yet: Hollywood A-listers Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe. Given how the biggest complaint about QD's previous games has been the atrocious voice acting, hiring two extremely talented, famous actors to work on the project should totally make the story more engaging, right? What Happened?: To their credit, Page and Dafoe both did terrific jobs with what they had, but Beyond's plot was a total mess, lurching into the patently ridiculous even while the game was clearly taking itself 100% seriously. It looks and sounds great for sure, but the choices didn't feel as emphatic or important as in Heavy Rain, and the game's generally uninteresting narrative ensured that Beyond quickly evaporated out of the gaming ether, as audiences await QD's latest cinematic effort.
