20 Video Games That Ruined Their Own Potential

18. Superman 64 (1999)

The Hype: A video game based on Superman: The Animated Series? Considering that, at the time, no single video game had truly made players feel like they were Superman, there was tremendous optimism that the N64 would be the right platform for the Man of Steel. Supes flying around a sprawling 3D world: how could Titus Software go wrong? What Happened?: One of the worst games ever made happened, that's what. Where to begin? The storyline is dull, the graphics are awful, so-called "Kryptonite fog" is used to thinly conceal the game's poor draw distance, the music is pencil-in-your-ears bad, the missions are boring and, perhaps worst of all, the controls are ridiculously fiddly, making the game both bad and extremely difficult. It understandably sold like hot cakes upon release, though its only real legacy is to endure as one of the worst games ever made, and a crushing failure of intent. It would emerge later that the game was heavily cormpromised by meddling from both DC Comics and Warner Bros, who are both fiercely protective of Superman's image and made strict demands about his depiction.
